Claude Oliver Says Hastings Should “Ask for Forgiveness”

And he wasn’t exactly nice about it…

Last Tuesday I attended a candidate forum held in Benton City Washington.  There were a variety of local candidates (of which I will write about in the near future) but what I was there to see were the 4th Congressional District Candidates.  While there was a rumor Richard (Doc?) Hastings would be there, as I suspected he was not (he sent a surrogate).  But Democratic Candidate Richard Wright and Republican primary challenger Claude Oliver were.

And is that Oliver ever a fireball.  When an audience question on immigration was posed, Oliver broad stroked the issue into one of national security and accountability…

This is another element that I look at… absentee responsibility.  This congressman (Hastings) should be right here in front of you tonight telling you what he hasn’t done, and what he will do, and asking for your forgiveness to keep him in office.

You can listen to a brief clip here (e-mail me for the full audio).

Chalk much of that rhetoric as grandstanding but I suspect it wouldn’t have been much different if Hastings had been there.  Hastings absence was said to be that he was on vacation in Aruba (on who’s dime we may never know) and yet his ability to show at Mike! McGavicks fundraiser “Starring Laura Bush” in Kennewick, displayed a level of arrogance that (generalizing Hastings behavior) Joel Connelly yesterday called stupidity.

Washington has been largely free from this behavior. Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., was shielded behind aides last year, as his actions as chairman paralyzed the House Ethics Committee. But the duck dive was more a function of stupidity than hubris.

Perhaps it was a little of both.  With polls trending towards democratic candidates for congress this November, Hastings primary challenge from Oliver could prove difficult.  One insider source notes however, that Oliver has less recognition outside of the Tri-Cities than perhaps Richard Wright.

Oliver is a curious anomaly to me.  In some circles I hear he is fiercely independent, and in others I hear he is as far right as they get.  One suggestion I have heard is that he is willing to tell folks whatever they want to hear.  Flannel-mouth populist rhetoric is easy if you know which buttons to push so this may well all be true.  But either way, he is racking up some support in amongst democrats and republicans alike.  He knows the support for nuclear technology is high in this district and has been a proponent for it, and a thorn in the side of DOE when they abandoned promising facilities like the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) and quietly attempted to avoid paying area taxes dating back to the 1940′s.  Yet his seeming alliance with newly hatched press Tri-City Citizen and it’s penchant for extremely partisan rhetoric from former Tri-City Herald writer Ken Harvey leave me with a lot of questions.  I mean, Harvey is fucking out there!  Most of what he writes reminds me of ultra right wing extremist chain mail and and is so easily shot full of holes that it is surprising he (if he’s not already) isn’t on the payroll of some right wing organization.

So who really is Claude Oliver?  I hope to find out…

I hope you do! I heard Oliver speak at the Labor Conference last week in Wenatchee, and he was fiery, but very smooth, and was warmly received by a roomful of hardcore union people. Quite odd. He said some surprising things for a Republican, such as he said he supports public financing of congressional campaigns. But fiery as he was, he was still not specific, no details, just rhetoric. I have no idea where he stands on “social” issues, but I could garner a guess. He was at the Labor show because he has great support from the mechanics’ union. He was so smooth he kind of gave me the willies, though. Please let us know what you find out.

Thanks. And I will do my best.

Nuclear Medicine not Nuclear Power Plants.

Yeah, with Doc there’s no need to differentiate between stupidity and hubris; he’s got both in spades. Going to the big wig fundraiser but not the candidate forum- what a tool!

I’m interested too, Jimmy, on whatever you’re able to discern about Oliver’s true character and positions. I’ve decided to vote Republican in the primary (please don’t gut me- the Dems I care about will definitely win their primaries), and I’d like to know that a vote for Oliver is NOT a vote for the devil I don’t know. :)

I was at the forum and I thought it great fun to watch two solid candidates bashing Doc. Oliver will undoubtedly lose the primary but it was encouraging to mingle in the crowd on Tuesday night and hear hard-core Oliver supporters say they’d step over to the Wright camp for the general election if it comes down to it. The widespread sentiment: Doc must be fired — whoever it is we end up hiring to take his place. Wright could learn a thing or two from Oliver about getting fired up, but he came across as more sincere and genuine. Hastings was again absent at a similar forum last night in Moses Lake. When will he take the people of his district seriously and start showing his face? Probably never…

There are 2 articles in the Herald, 1 yesterday and 1 today, about the 4 candidates for the 4th CD. I think the Hastings/Oliver one was terribly biased and insulting to Oliver, but the Wright/whats-his-name one today was better.

Claude is just an opportunist, not to be trusted, he fought against group homes for people with developmental disabilities in the 1970′s, was part of the Moral Majority and is NO FRIEND OF LABOR. He smeared a great Tri Citian so he could serve in Olympia and will do whatever it takes and say whatever he thinks will get him elected. He has tried to purge the GOP of moderates and now he is trying to be one.

DUMP HIM with Doc in the trash bin of worthless options and liars.

Jimmy  on September 6th, 2006

Who did he smear? (there is actually a point behind that question).

I will tell you who Claude Oliver is, he is someone that has served the people of Benton County faithfully for 25 years. First as Treasurer (15 years) now as commissioner. Claude is not afraid to stand up to the establishment, he fought DOE for nine years to secure over $50 million and counting for Benton, Franklin and Grant. He fought and is still fighting to keep the FFTF alive and now has the GNEP mission as a way to keep it from being destroyed. You are right “bob” he is an opportunist, he is constantly looking for ways to help this community. Claude is passionate about crime, drugs, homelessness and social programs. I will gladly vote Republican and Claude Oliver in the primary race!

Oh, Jimmy.
Claude is your man in this Primary election. What a great opportunity to dump doc and get on with a real general election between two really good men and great candidates.
Vote Claude and then let’s meet again in November.
Best regards.
Carl
ps. The GNEP proposal rocks.

Jimmy  on September 13th, 2006

Oh COURSE he is the man in the primary. Anyone who doesn’t vote against Doc? has to be nuts. But since Claude won’t interview with me (perhaps it has something to do with my family and a previous campaign??)

I am a volunteer in our communities, and personally got the chance to meet Claude Oliver. He meet with the team that I was working with at the time and spoke with us regarding changes in our community. He not only had the ideas to make our community stronger, but plans on how to follow through with them. I believe that we should vote for the people and not the political parties but have a tendency to vote more towards the democratic side. This is one candidate that definitely has my vote. He is a man that is not afraid to take action when he sees something that needs to be fixed. Many politicians will tell you what at least 90 percent of the public is complaining about, then tell you that they plan to fix the problem, but can never offer any plans to do so, and seldom actually do any thing but complain about the problems with every one else. Oliver is not one of those politicians, in many aspects I would not even consider him as a politician as much as I would consider him a revolutionist. He has reasons for his decisions and if you give him a chance he will explain the decisions he has made. I say if you want to truly know who Claude Oliver is, elect him into office and let him show you.
