Is the Wa. 8th LD Delegation Dis-ing Richland?
So I hear about the Town Meetings with our 8th District Representatives and think, “cool! I’ll have to go!”. 8th District Representatives Larry Haler, Shirley Hankins, and State Sen. Jerome Delvin are all going to be there. What a great opportunity! Then I check out the announcement and notice Richland is not on the circuit. Now West Richland is, but why not come to the larger of the two Richland’s? Well, one can only hope they are not doing this out of spite over the whole Hankins/NW Tire reports. After all, there are semi-neutral places, such as the Richland Library, to hold a one-hour event without having to… you know… run into any of your accusers. As much as I would like to think this has nothing to do with the Tri-City Herald/Chris Mullick reports well… whatever.
Citizens are invited to join in discussions about local and legislative issues during town hall meetings Saturday, March 17, in Prosser, West Richland and Kennewick. The meetings are sponsored by Sen. Jerome Delvin, Rep. Shirley Hankins, and Rep. Larry Haler, all R-Richland.
[Ehhhuummm... all R-Richland]
If Shirley was smart, and presumedly she is, she would insist that at least one meeting takes place in Richland. It is one thing to avoid confrontation when it isn’t productive. But it is another to run from it. And really, confronting this issue is really the best way to do damage control. And it isn’t like she and the rest of the gang have to answer any questions on the matter… after all, it is an “ongoing investigation”. But seriously, holding an event in West Richland’s City Hall/Library is just fine. It is only a two mile drive… er… doesn’t that seem silly to you too? Scheduling a Town Hall talk two miles away? Um… you could still walk to this one.
Bottom line is, if Shirley Hankins is trying to make a statement to the City of Richland, she is also making another one to us. If she is unwilling to be a true professional, and hold an event in seemingly unfriendly territory (which it isn’t), it could make it even more unfriendly two miles down the road, in a town 1/4 or so the size.
Having this event in Prosser, West Richland and Kennewick, and not in Richland only serves to widen the rift the Herald report created. Shirley may deny any wrongdoing, and yet may be proven correct. Yet, my Grandmother always told me you can’t run from your problems. Or one of your major voting bases.
Just sayin…
Update: The Tri-City Herald’s, Chris Mullick, picked up on the story (not that it wasn’t obvious) today. While Hankins, through her staff, deny stiffing the City of R, and the City or R plays down the importance, State Sen. Jerome Delvin (R-8) provides the quote of the day.
The new format, inviting officials from ports, school districts, chambers of commerce and the like, was first tried in a town hall meeting Delvin and Hankins had last month in Benton City. Delvin said it worked well and they figured they’d try it again.
But why wasn’t anyone from the city of Richland invited to participate?
“Talk to Hankins about that one,” Delvin said.
What can I say…

Go get her Jimmy. Bring 5 or 6 folks with you and split up the subject into 5-6 questions put forward in the right order and with hand outs. Go to all of the meetings and do the same. Reach out to the press. If they show, your people will get more defference.

Uh, no offense Jimmy, but I think you’re reading too much into this. Prosser, W. Richland, and Kennewick are a nicely spaced string of cities to hold these meetings in. That the candidates are all from Richland does not mean that they shouldn’t hold meetings outside the town. Honestly, call me naive, but I really don’t see the tire thing as having anything to do with this.

Naive. There… I called you it. LOL… Well, it seems odd to me that West would be chosen instead. Might be other reasons, but in light of the recent happenings, it does seem odd… I mean c’mon!! (laughing here).

Love the local angles. But if I were a state Repub, even a ‘Rino’ like Shirley, the last place I’d go is the Richland library. We frequent the place becaue we are old fashioned, but wow talk about making commie news outlets NPR and CNN look right wing.
Personally I think Hankins should go given the allegations about her biz dealings. Not that she’s guilty, but it’s enough for someone to politely step aside. Politics were not meant by our founders to be a career.
But you lefties should be careful of what you wish for. Hankins is a liberal. What if Richland actually elected a conservative? What would N Richland and all the Subaru (with bike racks) drivers at the N Richland Safeway do?!?
(Answer: keep eating those great pannini’s they do there…)

I know what you mean Hindu. We could wind up with a Kevin Young type in the seat. No thanks. I like my moderates and think they fit here in the 8th LD better anyway.
Those panini’s are good aren’t they!
March 16, 2007 - 7:30 pm
Sheesh. Please tell me you’re joking, Hindu. Hankins is NOT a liberal. The closest you can come to that in fairness is a “liberal Republican”, if you’re into that sort of semantics smashin. (OK, maybe that’s me- I’m totally into semantics smashin…)
Also, please don’t think that all of us on the liberal half of the spectrum relish the thought of Shirley leaving. Like Jimmy, I value moderate politicians, and I also like Hankins’ legislative style. If this all falls out the way it looks like it will and she is guilty of the whole schmear, well, it will be a sad day.
And Jimmy, it looks like you just might be right about me.
After reading that quote by Delvin in your update… wow. lol Why doesn’t he just throw her down the stairs and get it over with?!

So how about an update post meeting? What was the tone like? What was she asked and how did Shirley respond?

Sorry, I didn’t make it. Didn’t work out with the schedule for me.
