Obama Doesn’t know Hanford
Funny. I like his response though.
Heck, most people that don’t live around here either don’t know anything about Hanford, or think all us locals glow in the dark. Seriously!

Bah! That is just an easier answer than admitting that he was for nuclear safety before he was against it.
He damn well knows about Hanford he just doesn’t have an easy or “witty” answer for the problems. He is in run out the clock mode against Hillary lest he say something that sabotages his campaign with the super delegates.
I just wish someone would have asked him about the WMD bunkers in Hermiston. Now that would have made a juicy national media moment.

Watch these two links
Lethal and leaking Part 1
Lethal and leaking Part 2
Our own great governor Gregoire appears in the second clip with dire warnings. Given her role in the EPA, I trust her opinion here.
I think the Obama questioner’s “solution through dilution” is a very apt point. As I have mentioned in the past it has been proposed in the past that we build a massive concrete trench and divert the Columbia river around the problem leaky areas. Anyway you slice it solving this problem is going to require a massive engineering feat.

It appears that you are possibly mixing cleanup with the Energy NW Reactor. I’m taking his response at face value. Frankly, I don’t find his ignorance all that shocking. For nearly 8 years we’ve had a president who doesn’t know anything about Hanford.
But yes, that WMD question would have been fun in the 24hr. spin cycle.

I don’t take him at face value he is too intelligent to be taken for face value. If Obama truly doesn’t know anything about Hanford then it is a shame, he should have people around him who can provide some sort of briefing before he comes out to campaign in this neck of the woods. I will accept perhaps he hasn’t had time to craft a truly deep policy position on the subject but he should just admit that. And why shouldn’t he have someone around to brief him on Hanford, its not as if it is some mundane totally obscure topic. If there is anything that would break onto the national stage this would be that topic. Billions of dollars have been spent on it over the years. He sure did seem to know a bit about Yucca Mountain when he was in Nevada. Or at least enough to pander. Moreover, if he doesn’t have anyone to intelligently brief him I think this is really a symptom of the fact that here we are almost to June and the Oregon primary actually matters in this race. Which is probably a good thing because we get to be heard. I just wish could be gotten through the heads of the numbskulls who keep screaming for Hillary shut up and sit down.
On the trench issue. I understand the energy reactor is on the river and the waste tanks from weapons production are elsewhere. I just remember gramps making a point about the trench idea a long time ago. But if I understand the issue correctly there is a slow plume of radioactive material slowly making its way through the basalt through the basin towards the Columbia river. Obviously turning a bunch of the existing waste quickly into glass is a good idea. But what can be done about the already leaked waste? Something should be done to cordon it off from the river. Of course this is easier said than done I suppose.

Here is a longer version of the same moment where Obama goes into more detail.
I must say that the crowd cheering is kind of dumb though. The candor is nice, but why the cheering? This doesn’t strike me as an applause worthy moment. Oh well, I am just too bitter and cynical in my old age.

Kicking and screaming. But Dylan Thomas said it best.
