And on the Jay Leno thing I hate to be bitterly cynical but I just can’t help but think of a Bill Hicks routine I came across recently (warning audio NSFW):
It’s not a hybrid… LOL… 30 some odd gallons in 7 minutes (at full throttle and boost mind you)… Whoa! But when I saw this car run, I understood the appeal. I doubt my Fizzer would beat it in any 1/4 mile treat.
When I see stuff like the Air Car I think that ironically perhaps George Bush and the irrepressible greed of his oil cronies is the best thing to happen in that it is kick starting innovation around the world.
My only point is why the excitement over a car that can burn 30 gallons of fuel in 7 minutes? Leno makes the point that he is proud the Americans brought home the speed title. Meanwhile the French and the Australians are developing these air cars. We are losing and it doesn’t look pretty. I want to hear about how Detroit and good old American innovation is leading the way. But sadly when people would rather devote their energy on building sports cars that strive for some absurd speed record and burn 30 gallons in 7 minutes, I wonder what’s the point. It just strikes me as opulence of the worst kind. But I am not a gear head, never have been so I just don’t get it. Just like I don’t get Nascar or Drag races.
I am just a boring utilitarian.

Now this is something worth celebrating. The electric version of the Aero.
So I take some of my comments back.
